African Swine Fever Epidemic: 19 Counties Affected, EUR251 Million Paid To Farmers In Compensation

The African swine fever epidemic in Romania had spread as of Friday in 303 townships throughout 19 counties, with 1,153 outbreaks registered and 651 cases found in wild boars, according to data published by the country’s veterinarian and food safety agency ANSVSA.

African Swine Fever Epidemic: 19 Counties Affected, EUR251 Million Paid To Farmers In Compensation

As of Friday, 364,237 pigs were sacrificed in attempts to contain the epidemic. Nineteen of the outbreaks were registered in commercial swine exploitations.

Most of the outbreaks, 572, were registered in Tulcea county, followed by Braila (129) and Ialomita (125). Most cases of wild boars infected with the disease were signaled in Teleorman county – 380.

More than 8,500 owners of pigs which were sacrificed due to the epidemic have been compensated until now, with the total value of payments reaching RON251.12 million.

Only 19 outbreak areas have been declared disease-free since the infection was first signaled in the country in July 2017, with most of them – 13 – in Satu Mare county.
