Former Heads Of Romanian Gendarmerie Indicted In Illegal Hiring Case
Romanian prosecutors completed investigations in a case regarding illegal hiring within the Interior Ministry (MAI) and indicted Olimpiodor Antonescu, former inspector general of the Romanian Gendarmerie, and Nicolaie Rugina, former deputy inspector general.
Antonescu is accused of breaching the provisions of an order of the Interior Minister whereby holding exams to fill vacant positions within the ministry's structures and recruiting staff are suspended. The Romanian Government had frozen hiring in order to cut budget expenses and meet its international agreements.
According to prosecutors, in 2010, Antonescu organized an exam to hire four people, illegally unfreezing jobs within the ministry. He is also accused of illegally assigning three of them to positions within the Romanian Police.
Rugina was indicted on charges of abuse of office.
Alongside Antonescu and Rugina, five other people have been indicted in the same case, namely Constantin Baci, former MAI secretary general, Adrian Patrascu, former general director within the MAI Human Resources Department, Ion Valentin Opritescu, former general director of the MAI Financial Department, Constantin Stoleriu, former MAI officer, and Marian Valntin Grigoroiu, former director of the Human Resources Department within the Romanian Gendarmerie. They are all accused of abuse of office.
The case will be tried by the High Court of Justice.
