President: Accession To Schengen Area Not Possible Without Consensus

In a common press conference with Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor following a meeting between the two, Iohannis admitted the need for Romania to make further progresses to accomplish its goal.

“Everyone agrees that Romania belongs in Schengen. We are the most convinced of that, because Romania’s accession would improve security in the region. It is also necessary to make a number of progresses ourselves,” said the Romanian head of state.

When asked about how his tense relation with the Government could affect the process, the president said Schengen accession would not be possible without consensus and that both powers are “working at this project”.

Slovenian President Borut Pahor also stated that his country supports Romania’s Schengen Access and that he wished for it to happen during the six months the country will hold the EU Council presidency, until June 30, 2019.

The statements come after top EU officials have renewed their calls towards EU member states which are opposing the accession of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen Area and urged to stop blocking the process.
