Romania Issues Travel Warning For Greece, Following Malaria Reports

Romania's Health Ministry warns people planning to travel to Greece that cases of malaria infection have been reported in the Peloponnese (south), and a person who returned to Romania after spending two months in Greece was also infected.

According to Greek health authorities, six cases of malaria infection have been reported in the south since June, the Health Ministry said in a press release.

The ministry recommends that people planning holidays in Greece use mosquito-repellant products (creams, gels, sprays). Few infections have been reported so far, meaning the use of prophylactic medication is not recommended.

The Greek Disease Control Center has intensified its malaria surveillance activities and local authorities have taken extra measures to control the mosquito population.

In May, two Romanians who returned from work in Equatorial Guinea were admitted to the "Victor Babes" National Institute, under suspicion of malaria infection.

In March, a 65-year old woman diagnosed with malaria after a visit to Ghana died in the Timisoara County Hospital.
