Romania’s January industrial production posted the fourth biggest annual increase in the European Union, official data showed Friday.

Industrial output in Romania rose 6.8% on the year in January, according to EU's statistics office Eurostat.

It said production rose in twelve and fell in seven Member States in January compared to the same month of 2009. The highest increases were registered in Malta (+14.3%), Poland (+11.0%), the Czech Republic (+8.0%) and Romania.

The biggest annual falls were recorded in Denmark (-9.8), Lithuania (-5.5%), Greece (-4.4%) and Spain (-2.5%).

In January compared with a month earlier, Romanian industrial production inched up 0.1%, the smallest monthly increase in the EU, Eurostat data showed.

European Union's average industrial output increased by 1.8% on the month in January, and by 1.5% compared with January 2009.

Romania's adjusted industrial production rose 7.1% in January from the year-earlier month, on higher energy and manufacturing output, the statistics institute INS said earlier Friday.
