Romania’s Auto Market Saw 4th Biggest Decline In EU In Jan-Aug

Romania registered 55,488 new cars in the first eight months of the year, compared with 81,861 new registrations in the same period the year before, in the EU, the biggest declines were registered in Bulgaria (39.1%, to 10,134 units), Hungary (35.4%, to 29,602 units) and Slovakia (33.1%, to 38,507 units).

The biggest growth in new car registrations in January-August was recorded in Ireland, of 49.6%, to 79,145 units.

A total 9,021,703 cars were registered in the first eight months of the year across the European Union, except for Malta and Cyprus, for which there was no available data.

In August, 8,471 new cars were registered in Romania, down 1.4% compared with August last year, a much lower decline than the EU's 12.9% drop, to 701,710 units.

The biggest car market in the EU, both in the first eight months and in August alone, was Germany, with 1,907.104 new registrations in January-August (-28.7% on the year) and 200,885 new registrations in August (-27% on the year).

By carmakers, Romanian Dacia, owned by France's Renault, ranks fifth in the EU by new car registrations, with a 11.3% growth to 177,305 units in the first eight months. The Romanian carmaker increased its market share in the EU to 2% from 1.7%.

The top positions in the ranking are taken by Land Rover (37.3%), Nissan (19.6%), Volvo (17%) and Renault (13.5%).
