Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said Saturday during a visit in Zalau, northwestern Romania, his party does not agree with increasing retirement age for Romanian women as the latter face tougher life conditions than women elsewhere in the European Union.

Geoana said Romanian women do not benefit from the same state support as that granted by other EU member states, adding social democrats will agree with the pension law only if the principles proposed by the party are observed.

Geoana said pension point should be set at 45% of the gross average wage, adding social democrats will do their best for the pension law to be concluded by December.

Geoana said social democrats disagree with the Government's decision not to increase average pension point for retirees that worked in the I and II labor groups starting 2010.
Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said earlier Tuesday the government will seek a confidence vote in Parliament to enact and IMF-required pension law which will increase retirement age and eliminate special pensions, such as those of lawmakers, magistrates, military, law enforcement and intelligence services staff.

The Government has pledged to reform its public pension system by December under an IMF-led EUR19.95 billion financial rescue package.

Under the draft pension law, all special pensions will be integrated in the public system and will be recalculated depending on people's contributions, which means they will be reduced.
