Romanian Crina Popescu Holds World Record For Youngest Alpinist On Carstensz Pyramid Peak

Romanian Crina Popescu a.k.a Coco, 15, has become the youngest mountain climber in the world to climb the Carstensz Pyramid peak (4,884 meters) in Indonesia, Montan Altitudine Sport Club said in a press release.

On 24 January, Popescu climbed the highest mountain peak in Indonesia, Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 meters), becoming the youngest climber in the world to have reached this peak and the first Romanian climber on the the Carstensz Pyramid peak.

The world record was previously held by American Samantha Larson who reached the peak in 2007 at the age of 18.

The expedition organized by Montan Altitudine included three mountain peaks, namely Kosciuszko (2,228 meters), Giluwe (4,368 meters) and Carstensz Pyramid (4884 meters), and Popescu escaladed all three in a five-week expedition along with her father, Ovidiu Popescu.

Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Oceania and is considered to be the most technical in Seven Summits.

Popescu climbed four peaks in Seven Summits over the past three years (Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and Carstensz Pyramid) and five peaks in Seven Volcanoes (Elbrus, Ojos Del Salado, Damavand, Kilimanjaro and Mt. Giluwe).

Popescu plans to climb two other mountains this year, namely Pico de Orizaba, Mexico (5,636 meters) and Denali, Alaska (6,194 meters).
