Romanian Lower Chamber Sets Pension Bill Reexamination Calendar
The standing office of Romania’s Camber of Deputies Wednesday set a calendar for the reexamination of the pension bill, a piece of legislation required by the IMF and sent back to Parliament by President Traian Basescu.
The Chamber's standing office decided the final vote on the bill is to be held on December 7. Wednesday's meeting was held in the absence of members of the oppositions, who have been boycotting meetings for the past two months.
The chamber on Tuesday adopted an amendment to its rulebook to override the opposition's boycott. The change sets that the standing office can make decisions with the votes of the majority of members present and the meetings no longer require quorum.
Opposition members said they are outraged by the change and would challenge it at the Constitutional Court.
The Senate rejected the president's reexamination request on the pension bill last week. The head of state required that Parliament set the retirement age at 63 for women and 65 for men instead of equal retirement gets at 65. The Chamber of Deputies now has the final say on the bill before it is sent to the head of state who signs it into law.
