Romanian Police Check Nearly Ten Thousand Alleged Multiple Voting Cases In June EP Election
Romanian police said it is checking data regarding 9,959 alleged multiple voting cases in the European Parliament election held in June, which it has just received Tuesday from the country’s Standing Electoral Authority.
Police has previously received such notices for 1,310 other possible instances of multiple voting and have opened 687 criminal records, of which 77 cases are currently pending trial.
Multiple voting is punishable by six months to three years in prison.
The government changed the election law before EP elections to allow people to vote in any polling stations instead of just where they are registered. Because that measure paved the way for fraud and multiple voting, the Standing Electoral Authority was supposed to check voter lists using special software and immediately find instances of multiple voting. EP elections were held six months ago.
Meanwhile, Romania has held a presidential election Sunday which is now subject to a Constitutional Court ruling on claims that the poll was rigged.
