Romanian President Suspended By Parliament

Some 116 MPs voted not to suspend Basescu.

Crin Antonescu (PNL), chairman of the Senate, therefore becomes acting head of state.

If voters decide to impeach Basescu, the Government will hold early elections for president within 90 days.

This will be the second time Basescu faces dismissal. In 2007, Basescu was suspended by Parliament, but in the subsequent referendum, more than 74% of citizens voted to keep him in office.
