Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana on Friday was elected president of the Senate, with 96 “pros” and 35 “cons.”

Geoana was the only candidate for this position, as the democrat liberals, the liberals and the Hungarian minority announced in the Senate’s plenary meeting they had no candidates for this position.

The parliamentary group formed of social democrats and conservatives on Friday decided to propose Geoana at the Senate’s headship and conservative senator Dan Voiculescu as vice-president.
