Romanian Unionists To Continue Protests, Threaten General Strike

The leader of the Federation of Free Unions in Education, Aurel Cornea, said a calendar of protests has already been drawn and it includes aspects specific to each domain of the public sector, as well as general forms of protest that take into account going on general strike.

Executive president of the Spiru Haret Federation Marius Nistor said the members of the unions' alliance will not discard their claim for the government to drop its measure requiring employees to take ten days of unpaid leave.

Unionists said Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea confirmed that many jobs will be scrapped in the near future. They added the layoffs are likely to be made during the enforcement of the unitary wage law.

Representative of the public sector employees' alliance Aurel Cornea said the Government said things are going well, but none of the problems raised was solved.

Public sector employees went on general strike Monday protesting against the Government's recently passed unitary wage law.

Over 750,000 employees in the public sector agreed to participate in the protest and not show up for work.

Over 20,000 public sector employees will picket the Government Wednesday asking for a new wage grid, new jobs and a 740 lei (EUR1=RON 4.2670) minimum wage in 2010.
