The Ombudsman, on the idea of quarantining those over 65: Authorities must reassure them

In the last two days, hundreds of petitions have been received at the Ombudsman's Office, in which elderly people express their fear in connection with the so-called plans and statements of some Romanian state officials regarding the removal of people over 65 from their families and from their homes.

"Given the role of the ombudsman as a constitutional guarantor of rights and freedoms, given the seriousness of the fear created by the spread in the public space of the possibility of applying a measure reminiscent of tragic moments in history rather than protecting a vulnerable population, given that the Decree on the establishment of the state of emergency and its extension prohibit the dissemination of false information and obliges the authorities to inform correctly, the ombudsman asks the president of Romania, the prime minister and the Strategic Communication Group to reassure the population and give assurances that the adoption of such totalitarian measures will never be an option in Romania", it is shown in a press release of the Ombudsman's Office.

A series of information have circulated in the public space according to which people over 65 will have to stay at home for 3 months, but the Health minister, Nelu Tătaru, denied the information and said that there is no question of imposing a measure to isolate people over 65 for 3 months.
