Angry with salary cuts, public transportation drivers stopped work

About 2,000 drivers of trolleys, busses and trams yesterday morning refused to take their vehicles out of Bucharest Public Transport Authority (RATB) depots, which resulted in no ground-public transportation being available in Romania’s capital city Thursday.

Mediafax reports RATB employees complaining about salary cuts. It was not just RATB drivers that went on strike, but other staff too, including electricians or ticket inspectors. Five hundred drivers gathered at the RATB Titan depot yesterday morning and went on wild cat strike. They prepared a list of salary demands, including salary renegotiations, daily working hours being cut from eight to six, without commensurate salary reductions, 20 per cent heavy work bonus and a holiday bonus of 80 per cent of their new salary.
