Romanian Graft-Charged Senator Stays In Custody

Romanian senator Catalin Voicu stays under preventive arrest, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday, rejecting his request to be investigated at large.

Prosecutors argued Voicu should be kept in custody to avoid any attempt to influence the investigation or intimidate witnesses.

Voicu has been under arrest since late March on charges of influence peddling and fraud. Authorities also arrested businessmen Costel Casuneanu and Marius Locic, and Supreme Court judge Florin Costiniu in the same case, but all three are now being investigated at large.
