Romanian President Calls For Criminal Probes Against High-Ranking Officials

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Monday called for an extraordinary meeting of the parliament’s two chambers, asking the MPs to approve criminal probes against former ministers and acting lawmakers, president spokesman Valeriu Turcan said.

The head of state’s request follows the recent country report released by the European Commission, which criticized Romania’s poor result in fighting corruption, especially at high levels.

Basescu had called before for a joint meeting of the parliament’s chambers, at the beginning of the parliamentary summer recess.
