Tax evasion in the Romanian agriculture sector reached EUR1 billion this summer, Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara said Friday during the Mediafax talks about Romanian Agriculture seminar.

"Tax evasion is one of the major problems in the agriculture sector," said Tabara, adding that, even if products were confiscated, the phenomenon has intensified even more.

The minister also pointed out to tax evasion resulted from not paying VAT for imported products. He said local agriculture departments, which also have checkup bodies, should do more to tackle this problem.
