Dacian Ciolos Appointed Renew Europe Group Leader

Ciolos was preferred by Renew Europe members over Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld and Swedish MEP Fredrick Federley in a vote on Wednesday.

The former chief of cabinet is currently the chairman of Romania's PLUS party and co-leader of the 2020 USR-PLUS Alliance, which won eight seats in the recent European Parliament elections.

“Chairing Renew Europe is just a step in the political construct we have planned in the past two years. It is an important step, but only the beginning of our project (…) We will continue to bring as much of Europe into Romania through our activity in Brussels and MEP cabinets which will be opened throughout the country,” the PLUS leader wrote in a Facebook post following Wednesday’s vote.

Renew Europe is the third largest group in the European Parliament following the May 26 elections, with 108 MEPs.
