Romania Absorbed Over 80% Of EU Funds For Schengen Accession, Highest Rate In Europe

Romanian Interior Minister Vasile Blaga said Romania has managed to absorb over 80% of the European Union funds earmarked for accession to the Schengen Area and has rejoiced positive reports on maritime, air and ground borders, during various assessment missions.

Blaga said Romania has struggled to achieve these objectives in view of joining the Schengen Area and stressed it also managed to achieve the highest absorption rate of EU funds for accession to the Schengen Area.

According to Blaga, most funds, nearly EUR610 million, came from the Schengen facility or PHARE programs, while EUR540 million came from the state budget, of which EUR20 million were assigned this year alone.

Blaga pointed out that Romania must finalize works on passenger terminals on international airport Traian Vuia in Timisoara, western Romania, and Bucharest's international airport Henri Coanda Otopeni, respectively, which will serve passengers coming from the Schengen Area.

"The passenger terminal on Traian Vuia airport will be finalized at the beginning of July, whereas the terminal on Otopeni airport is likely to be finalized until October 30 this year", Blaga said.

Blaga also said Romania will have the most modern Schengen operations center in Europe, which will be slated for service soon.
