Romania is the 16th largest auto market in the European Union by new car registrations in 2010, whose number dropped three times more abruptly locally than in the EU, according to data released Friday by the European Carmakers Association ACEA.

New car registrations in the EU decreased 5.5% in 2010, to 14.13 million units, from 13.36 million units in 2009, ACEA said.

Romania registered 94,541 new cars last year, 18.5% fewer than in 2009, and the Romanian auto market dropped to the 16th spot in the EU in 2010 from the 14th spot in 2009, overtaken by Denmark and Finland.

Germany, the biggest European auto market saw one of the steepest declines last year. New car registrations in Germany dropped 23.4% last year, to 2.91 million units from 3.8 million units in 2009.

The biggest declines percentagewise were registered in Greece (-35.8%) and Bulgaria (-28.9%).

Romanian carmaker Dacia, part of French group Renault, saw a 9.1% growth in new car registrations, to 257,753 units.

Renault, with a growth of 4.4% to 1.8 million new cars registered, is the third largest European carmaker, after Volkswagen (2.83 million cars, -4.9%) and PSA Peugeot Citroen (1.8 million cars, -2.8%).

U.S. groups General Motors and Ford had a weaker year in Europe, with declines of 7.6% and 13.9%, respectively, in car registrations. Italian group Fiat, the new investor in U.S.' Chrysler, saw a significant decline, of 17.4%, in new car registrations in Europe in 2010.

BMW posted a 5.7% growth and Daimler, owner of Mercedes Benz, saw a decline of 2.2%.

Japanese group Toyota posted a decline of 17.4%, and Nissan, Renault's partner, ended the year 2010 with a 9.2% growth in new car registrations in the EU.
