Romania Pleads To Include Serbia, Moldova In EU Single Energy Market

"The Council has a conclusion for the creation of the single energy market in the European Union, which means that, by 2014, all regulations regarding the single energy market should be in place and there should be no energy 'island' on EU territory by 2015," Basescu said, according to the release.

"The single energy market comprises electricity and natural gas and it's interesting that non-EU countries like Serbia and the Republic of Moldova are considered for interconnection," he said, adding Romania supports the inclusion of its two neighboring countries in the EU energy market.

He added having all EU member states would significantly help lower the risk for a new gas shortage.

"This will allow Romania, for instance, to up its gas supply wither from Russia's Gazprom, or with gas extracted from the North Sea or liquefied gas from Algeria or other places," Basescu said.

The head of state also said Romania pleaded for consideration of vulnerable people in establishing the EU energy markets' price policies.

"We should find a way to subsidize or set prices so that energy is affordable for anyone," Basescu said.
