Romanian Constitutional Court To Rule On Dec 15 On Liberals’ Challenge To Pension Law

The challenge, signed by 55 liberal lawmakers, was submitted Wednesday evening and claims the new law discriminates between men and women by setting different retirement ages.

"This law is clearly unconstitutional from out point of view, according to this law, women will have a smaller pension then men because they will contribute to the system for a shoter period," said liberal Eugen Nicolaescu.

The Romanian Parliament on Tuesday adopted the IMF-required pension law that the head of state had sent back for reexamination, requesting that the retirement age be set at 63 for women and 65 for men.

The bill was adopted with 172 votes in favor and the only amendment was brought to the article regarding retirement age, as the president had requested.

The bill needs to be designed by President Traian Basescu into law.
