Romanian Dacia Sales In Europe Up 28.6% In 1H ‘09

The number of new Dacia cars registered in the EU and Iceland, Norway and Switzerland grew, in the first half of the year, by 28.6%, to 117,131 units, with the brand seeing the strongest growth, according to data presented Wednesday by the European car makers' association ACEA.

Romanian Dacia Sales In Europe Up 28.6% In 1H ‘09

In June, Dacia registrations in the 28 countries (EU without Cyprus and Malta, plus the three states outside the community bloc) grew by 58.2%, to 27,144 cars, the company also seeing the biggest growth, according to a monthly report of ACEA, released Wednesday.

The number of Dacia cars registered in Europe in the first half of the year reached slightly over 91,000 units, while in June 2008 the number reached 17,154 cars.

The European market dropped by 11% in the first six months, to 7,425 million passenger vehicles, from 8.346 million cars in the similar interval of 2008. In June, new car slaes in Europe grew by 2.4%, to 1.461 million units, from 1.427 million, due to car park renewal programs implemented by Government, according to the ACEA report.

German group Volkswagen maintained its position as leader of the European auto market, with 1.591 million new cars registered in the first six months, down 3.1% on the first half of 2008. In June, Volkswagen saw an increase of 9.5% in the number of new cars registered, to 312,000 units.

French group PSA Peugeot Citroen ranked second, with 947,893 new cars registered in the first quarter, representing a 12.2% increase. PSA too registered growth, of 4.4%, in June, to 191,638 units registered, due to car park renewal programs.

The third, fourth and fifth positions were taken by the groups Ford, General Motors and Fiat, while Renault, majority shareholder in Dacia, ranked sixth, with 644,171 new cars registered between January and June, down 13%. Renault registrations grew in June, by 3.4%, to some 142,000 units.

On western European markets (EU15 plus Isceland, Norway and Switzerland), Dacia saw a doubling of registrations in the first half, to over 91,000 new cars. In June, the number of new Dacia cars registered grew some three times, to 21,480 cars.
