Bucharest’s international airport Henri Coanda - Otopeni will organize an auction late September to secure bird control services using Border Collies, in a bid to increase flight safety.

The airport plans to pay an estimated 1.9 million lei (EUR1=RON3.4719) for 60 months for such services.

Bidders must deposit a guarantee of RON9,500.

Bidders must prove they have employed a veterinarian and a certified dog trainer, must have a dog shelter and land of at least 10,000 square meters for dog training.

"We need six dogs, Border Collie, to chase away the birds interfering with air traffic. The method is used successfully in other countries and it’s quite cheap,” one of the airport’s managers, Valentin Iordache, said in April.
