Court Maintains 20-Year Jail Term For Syrian Businessman Hayssam

Romania’s High Court of Justice decided Wednesday to maintain the sentence of 20 years in prison for Syrian businessman Omar Hayssam, for involvement in the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005.

The court rejected as ungrounded Hayssam’s request for a retrial. The court also obliged Hayssam to pay RON300 in legal fees.
 
Hayssam fled Romania in June 2006, after he was released from jail on medical grounds. He is internationally wanted.
