Electoral Office Rejects Oprescu’s Candidacy For Bucharest Mayor

The Bucharest electoral office rejected Wednesday the candidacy of former social democrat senator Sorin Oprescu, as over 4000 signatures backing him for the race were invalid and he was left 400 signatures short.

Electoral office head Constantin Marino Marin said Oprescu needed 35,803 valid signatures, but 4,982 were considered invalid and the senator was left 400 signatures short of the legal threshold allowing him to run for Bucharest mayor.

Marin added Oprescu may appeal the decision in court within 48 hours.
