Laitenberger: EC Representatives Speak On Behalf Of Commission

The representatives of the European Commission address all public statements on behalf of the Community’s executive, therefore any discontent with the position expressed by the EC should be addressed to the Commission directly, EC spokesman Johannes Laitenberger told MEDIAFAX Tuesday.

Laitenberger replied to a letter signed by Romania’s MEP Adrian Severin, in which the Romanian official asked for the resignation of EC spokesman Mark Gray, following his “unprofessional and fundamentally wrong” statements.

“On September 4th, the spokesman of the European Commission Mark Gray, answering to a question from journalists during his press conference, stated that the decision of the Romanian Parliament concerning the system of appointment of the Romanian prosecutors goes against the position of the European Commission, expressed in its country report on the progress of justice and the fight against corruption in Romania,” Severin said in his letter.

Severin said Gray should be dismissed if his statements were not made on behalf of the European Commission.

In his reply, however, Laitenberger said Gray’s position reflected EC’s stance on the matter.

Discontent with the position expressed by the European Commission should be addressed to the Commission and not to spokespeople, Laitenberger added.

Laitenberger said that as long as the European Commission imposed certain objectives to Romania, it is normal for the Commission to express its position on these matters.
