Romania Presidential Election Voter Turnout At 53.51% By GMT1700

Voter turnout in Romania’s presidential election runoff was at 53.51% by GMT1700, the Central Electoral Bureau said.

Turnout was of 50.59% in urban areas and 50.51% in rural areas.

In capital Bucharest, voter turnout by GMT1700 was of 50.13%.

Romania's 18 million eligible voters were expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect their president for the next five years. The contenders in the runoff were incumbent President Traian Basescu and social democrat Mircea Geoana.

Polls close at GMT1900.
