Romanian Conservative Party founder and president Dan Voiculescu announced Monday he was resigning from the Senate, over the defeat of a bill providing harsher punishment for tax evasion.

Romanian Conservative Party Leader Voiculescu Resigns From Senate

The bill, which doubled the punishment for tax evasion, was defeated in the Senate's committee for budget-finance.

Voiculescu said he could not understand how that committee could issue a negative report on such a bill.

Following this announcement, senator Ioan Ghise requested, on behalf of the Liberal Party, that the bill be sent back to the committee. His proposal was approved by the plenum.
