Romanian Govt-Unions Minimum Wage Talks To Continue Next Week

The representatives of union federations CNSLR Fratia, Cartel Alfa, Meridian and BNS met with prime minister Calin Tariceanu Thursday, to discuss an increase in the minimum wage.

Last Wednesday, the unionists initiated protests, rallying in front of the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Labor.

They announced they would continue the rallies for some two weeks, as they are preparing a wider rally in front of the government, if the Executive does not approve the increase of the minimum wage from RON500 to RON540 (EUR1 = RON3.5507), as it said it would in the protocol concluded in December 2007.

Representatives of the Government and those of unions and employers convened, on December 11, 2007, that starting with 2008 there would be one single minimum wage on economy. The level of this salary was to be set at RON500 in the first half of the year and, if the economic indexes allow it, it would grow to RON540, in the second half of the year.
