Romanian President Cautions Local Authorities Regarding EU Fund Use

Romanian President Traian Basescu said on public radio Thursday checkups targeting several local projects financed with European funds revealed some irregularities and warned local authorities they might have to return the money.

The head of state pointed out that problems regarding the implementation of EU-funded contracts appear when the respective projects are transferred from ministries to local authorities.

Basescu urged local administration authorities which use EU funds allotted through the Tourism, Agriculture and Labor ministries to solve problems, as they might be forced to pay back the money.
