"There were no direct reproaches, but guidelines. We had a very technical discussion,” Predoiu said.

The justice minister added the president told Council members not to look back in anger and observe the key moments when they should have made different decisions.

The meeting of the High Council of Magistrates, attended by president Basescu, was held behind closed doors at the president’s request.

In the country report on Romania, released Wednesday, the European Commission criticized the High Council of Magistrates saying the institution received sufficient resources to operate effectively, but has not improved accountability and ethical standards of its members.
