Romanian Presidential Election Prelim Results At GMT0900: Basescu – 50.37%, Geoana – 49.62 %

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 50.37% of the votes in the second round of elections and social democrat contender Mircea Geoana got 49.62%, according to preliminary results released Monday by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 99.13% of polling stations.

Tables have turned in Romania's presidential election as the vote count credits Basescu with 50.37% of votes although exit polls Sunday night showed Geoana in the lead.

Both Basescu and Geoana claimed victory late Sunday after polls closed. Three exit polls gave Geoana a slight lead and one exit poll showed Basescu winner.
