Romanian Senate Adopts Decree Forcing Pensioners To Pay Social Healthcare Contributions

Romanian senators on Wednesday voted 35 to 33 and one abstention to adopt a Government emergency decree forcing pensioners with pensions of over 740 lei (EUR1=RON4.2350) to pay social healthcare contributions of 5.5%.

The decree extends the base of social healthcare contributors by including pensioners and revolutionaries whose monthly income exceeds RON740.

The decree was not endorsed by the Senate's committee for healthcare and was criticized by members of the opposition.
