Romanian Senate Committee OKs Teaching History, Geography In Minorities’ Languages

Education committee president Mihail Hardau said the articles targeting teaching in national minorities' languages were approved in the form adopted by the Chamber of Deputies.

Hardau said the committee reintroduced an article whereby Romanian language and literature will be taught in secondary schools and high schools with minority language teaching using special textbooks and curricula designed for each national minority.

The education committee debated Tuesday the articles of the education bill regarding teaching in national minorities' languages. The committee will send a report on the bill to the Senate.

The Government sought a confidence vote in Parliament top pass the education bill late October after having pulled the bill from the Senate to speed up its adoption. The opposition submitted a no-confidence motion over the bill, which was never debated and put to the vote. The education bill was therefore considered adopted and entered effect in February 2011, while the Parliament continued its own adoption procedures.
