Romanian Senate Passes Bill Easing Expropriation Procedures

Romanian senators Tuesday passed a bill allowing authorities to expropriate owners for public works even if said owners are discontent with what they are paid for their property.

The bill, initiated by the Transport Ministry, got 87 votes in favor.

Owners discontent with the level of compensation offered by the state may address courts but can no longer contest the transfer of property, which allows authorities to issue construction permits for public works.

The bill still has to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies to become law.
