Romanian Social Democrat Leader’s Father Dies At Age 81

The father of Romania’s social democrat presidential candidate Mircea Geoana died from cancer Tuesday, at age 81, in a hospital in capital city Bucharest.

General Ioan Geoana, who served as head of Romania’s Civil Defense Commandment, had been in the hospital for over two months.

Mircea Geoana is the head of Romania’s Social Democratic Party, part of the country’s ruling coalition, and the chairman of the Romanian Senate. He is also the party’s presidential candidate for elections due this fall.
