Romanian Social Democrat VP Accepts Running For Bucharest Mayor

The vice-president of Romania’s leftist opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD), Cristian Diaconescu, accepted Friday to run for the general mayor seat in capital city Bucharest, people close to the discussions told MEDIAFAX.

The party’s standing office meeting ended immediately after Diaconescu accepted the party leaders’ proposal.

After the meeting, social democrats declined to make any comments, but president Mircea Geoana said the party’s candidate would be announced very shortly. The proposal is pending validation by the party’s executive committee.
