Romania’s Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, together with the Youth Platform for Sustainability and UNICEF Romania, has launched the selection process for the Youth Advisory Council on Climate and the Environment (CCT-CM). The new body will have 20 members aged between 14 and 35, who will be able to take part in consultations and make recommendations on environmental public policy.

Diana Buzoianu: “Young people’s voices must matter”

Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu says the new mechanism should give young people the opportunity to participate consistently in the development of public policies on climate and the environment.

“The decisions we make today in the areas of the environment and climate directly concern young people and will shape their future. That is why it is important that their voices are not merely heard, but that they have a genuine and permanent framework through which they can contribute to public policy,” Diana Buzoianu said.

According to the minister, the Council will seek to bring together young people from different regions and backgrounds and to create “a dialogue based on data, science and verified information.”

What the new council will do

The activities of the CCT-CM will cover issues such as climate change and adaptation to its effects, biodiversity, pollution, waste management, climate and environmental education, and public participation.

The 20 members will be able to take part in consultations with institutions, experts, communities and other young people, analyze current issues and formulate public policy recommendations.

They will also be able to follow how their proposals are assessed by public institutions.

Who can apply

The selection process is open to people aged between 14 and 35 who live in Romania and are interested in climate, the environment, civic participation, communication, education or related fields.

The Ministry states that previous professional experience in environmental issues, climate policy or public policy is not required.

Candidates will be assessed based on their motivation, analytical and argumentation skills, critical thinking, interest in fact-checking and verifying information, willingness to participate, and ability to collaborate.

The organizers say they will also seek to ensure the broadest possible diversity in terms of geographic area, social background and age groups.

Applications are open until August 31st

Applications can be submitted until August 31st, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

The evaluation process will take place between September 1st and September 4th, while shortlisted candidates will be interviewed between September 8th and September 11th.

The 20 members will be announced on September 12th, 2026, and the Council’s first in-person meeting is scheduled to take place between September 14th and September 18th.

Travel and accommodation costs for participants coming from other localities will be covered by the organizers.

The Council’s technical secretariat will be provided by the Youth Platform for Sustainability, while the Ministry of Environment will ensure the connection with institutional public policy development processes.

UNICEF Romania will support the participation of children and the use of age-appropriate methods.
