Romanian Parliament Halts Prosecution In High-Profile Graft Cases

Romania’s lower house of parliament hindered Wednesday prosecutions for graft on former prime minister Adrian Nastase and former transport minister Miron Mitrea, as deputies rejected the anticorruption department’s request for a go-ahead in the probes.

In the case concerning bribery allegations against former social democrat prime minister Nastase, 120 lawmakers were in favor of prosecution, 150 disapproved and six votes were declared null.

In the case of social democrat Mitrea, 160 lawmakers voted in favor of prosecution, 108 against and one vote was declared null.

The anticorruption department needed approval from 218 lawmakers to prosecute the two high-profile politicians.
