EC Won’t Comment On Romania’s Chief-Anticorruption Prosecutor Appointment Until Procedure Ends

The European Commission will not comment on the appointment of a new chief prosecutor of Romania’s Anticorruption Department, or DNA, until the end of the procedure, Commission spokesman Mark Gray told MEDIAFAX Friday.

Romania’s High Council of Magistrates rejected Thursday the nomination of Monica Serbanescu for chief anticorruption prosecutors.

"The final decision belongs to the president. We shall make a comment at the end,” Gray said, emphasizing the comments he makes are on behalf of the European Commission.

Gray cared to add that the Commission can confirm that Romania’s prosecutor general Laura Codruta Kovesi was in Brussels last week for discussions with officials of the Secretariat General. He said discussions were technical and targeted reform in the legal system and the fight against corruption.
