EU Seeks De-politicized Fight Against Corruption In Romania

Decision on high profile top level corruption cases in Romania are too politicized and the country needs to show there are sanctions for such cases, European Commission spokesman Johannes Laitenberger said in a briefing on the conclusions of the report on the Romania.

The European Commission adopted Wednesday country monitoring reports for Romania and Bulgaria, which joined the EU bloc on Jan 1, 2007.

The EC report on Romania notes that aside from continuous good track record shown by the National Anticorruption Department, or DNA, courts continue to deliver lenient sentences and inconsistent sanctions, and key cases concerning high profile politicians show no real progress. 

The report also noted the lack of political consensus on justice reforms and the fight against high level corruption, criticized the Parliament for delaying investigations into key corruption cases and the Government for resorting to emergency ordinances too often to pass laws.
