The ministers said both Romania and neighbor Bulgaria are to “intensify their efforts by taking all necessary steps without delay and by demonstrating tangible and lasting results, especially in the areas highlighted by (EC) reports.”

The ministers pointed out that the EU-27 bloc requires strong and effective legal and judicial system to function properly and ensure all citizens enjoy the benefits of EU membership.

In July, the EC criticized the two new member states for poor results in fighting corruption.

Despite the criticism, Romania managed to avoid sanctions from the authorities in Brussels, unlike Bulgaria, which saw aid worth hundreds of millions of euros suspended.
