Record Smuggled Cigarettes Bust In Western Romanian Customs

Romanian customs police officers in Nadlac, at the country’s western border, made the smuggled cigarette bust of the year, discovering some 350,000 packs of cigarettes hidden in a freight truck on route to Germany Thursday night.

According to the documents accompanying the merchandise, the driver, a Bulgarian citizens, was transporting vegetables from Greece to Germany.

"When controlling the freight compartment, police officers discovered there were only a few crates of vegetables, while the remaining boxes were filled with cigarettes. These are some 700 boxes of 500 packs of unstamped cigarettes each, of different brands,” said Mihaela Les, spokesperson for Arad County Border Police Inspectorate.

The cigarettes, with a market value of RON2 million, were confiscated and will be turned over to customs authorities, while the transporting company will be fined 100,000 lei (EUR1=RON3.6139).

The 40-year old Bulgarian driver will be heard with a translator.
