Romanian Govt Agrees To Move Up Pension Hikes To October 1

The Romanian government aged to move up pension hikes to October 1, the head of the country’s main opposition Social Democratic Party, Mircea Geoana, said Tuesday, adding the party will no longer call for a no-confidence vote to bring down the minority government.

After a meeting with liberal Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu and cabinet, Geoana said that his leftist opposition party strongly believes pension hikes should take effect as of October 1, instead of November, as the government had planned, because higher utility prices affect pensioners as of that date.

Geoana said the government agreed to increase pensions as of October.

"Under these circumstances, the no-confidence vote we planned to call for is no longer required," the leftist leader said.

The government had recently decided to move up pension hikes to November 1, instead of January 1, 2009, as initially planned.

Romania will hold a general election on November 30 in which the main contenders are expected to be the Liberal Party, part of the current minority government, the Democratic Liberal Party, formerly led by acting President Traian Basescu, and the leftist social democrats.
