Geoana added legislative elections in the fall would be a good time to call for a referendum to amend the Constitution.
He added the party’s standing office approved and voted unanimously to draft the law, although one member, whom he declined to name, abstained.
The national standing office approved the proposition made by party leader Mircea Geoana to amend the Constitution and lift immunity for the head of state, government members and lawmakers. Social democrats are to trigger procedures to adopt a draft law amending the Constitution at the beginning of the parliament session in the fall, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX earlier Tuesday.
Social democrats will also urge the Senate to adopt amendments to the law on the High Council of Magistrates and will propose amendments to the law on ministers’ liability.
Geoana told a news conference Sunday the party would propose a draft law amending the Constitution at the beginning of the parliament session to lift immunity for dignitaries. He added the draft needs the signatures of a 25% of lawmakers to pass, and the party has that many lawmakers.
