Banks Call for Amended Regulations to Postpone Loan Payments

The central bank said it was analyzing the request and would discuss it with officials in Brussels.

Meanwhile, banks may decide how to proceed case by case, depending on the situation, without the framework.

Banks have also called for a higher cap on the acquisition of state paper. This request is also under analysis and would be discussed with the Eu and the European Central Bank.

Romania will need more money in the upcoming period to navigate the crisis and will have to sell more state paper. Romanian banks are currently at the upper limit regarding state paper holdings.

Meanwhile, state-owned CEC Bank said it was postponing loan payments owed by individuals for one month, while Banca Romaneasca, recently bought by the Romanian state via Eximbank, said it would postpone loan payment on mortgage and consumer loans for a month or two, on request.

BRD SocGen said it was deciding case by case, Raiffeisen proposes a solution already available in its offer, and ING Bank said it has not yet received any requests to postpone due payments on loans.

Banca Transilvania, the country's largest lender by assets, said it was extending the grace period on credit cards until May.
