Ciolacu met with Netanyahu: Israel has the right to defend itself

At the end of the meeting, the two political leaders had a press conference.

"Romania remains a constant state in its relations in the Middle East. That is why we are extremely concerned about the increasing spiral of violence with terrible consequences for both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I want to assure the Romanians in the homeland that we will maintain our attitude as promoters of peace, but we will stand unconditionally by our friends and partners in difficult moments, defending democratic values. Romania has strongly condemned what has happened in Israel in recent days, the level of atrocities produced by Hamas, a terrorist group that holds the Palestinian population hostage to satisfy its extremist interests", Marcel Ciolacu said from Israel.

The Romanian Prime Minister also said that Romania supports Israel's right to defend itself "in full respect of humanitarian law".

"The Romanian Parliament was the first legislative body among democratic states to adopt a declaration of solidarity with Israel. Together with the international community, Romania calls for the immediate release of all hostages and kidnapped persons and for restraint from further acts of aggression, in particular against civilian targets. We have communicated to Prime Minister Netanyahu that in the face of these attacks, Israel has every right to defend itself in full accordance with humanitarian law", added the Romanian Prime Minister.

Ciolacu also called for "facilitating the humanitarian corridors in Gaza" and for the evacuation of Romanians from the area.

"I would like to thank for the engagement of the Israeli authorities and for your support for the safe repatriation of more than 2200 Romanian citizens from Israel... I wish for a joint effort for the safe evacuation of Romanian citizens from the Gaza Strip", said Marcel Ciolacu.
