Romania ranks fifth in Europe by trade deficit in the first ten months of 2007, up two places against the corresponding period in 2006, according to the statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat.

Romania’s trade deficit reached EUR17.3 billion in January-October 2007, compared to EUR11.2 billion a year ago, Eurostat said. 

Romania’s overall exports rose 13% to EUR24.3 billion in the mentioned interval, against EUR21.4 billion in the first ten months of 2006, while imports were up 27% to EUR41.5 billion from EUR32.6 million in 2006.

The United Kingdom registered the largest deficit among EU members in January-October 2007, of EUR112.4 billion, followed by Spain (EUR78.6 billion), France (EUR34.9 billion), Greece (EUR32.0 billion), Romania, Portugal (EUR15.4 billion) and Poland (EUR13.2 billion).

Germany was the EU country with the largest trade surplus in the mentioned interval, of EUR165.6 billion, followed by the Netherlands (EUR34.5 billion), Ireland (EUR25.2 billion), Belgium (EUR12.8 billion) and Sweden (EUR11.4 billion).

Eurostat data concerning the Romanian trade deficit is similar to the figures released by the country’s statistics institute, or INS, which indicate a trade deficit of EUR17.22 billion in the first ten months of the year.
